Ensuring your child achieves and maintains optimal oral health is vital, and the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) makes it easier for families to access essential dental services. Here’s what you need to know about what’s covered and how to maximise these benefits.
What Services Are Covered Under the Plan?
The CDBS provides up to $1,132 in benefits for each eligible child over two calendar years for essential care. This cap is indexed yearly on 1 January, and any increase applies only if your child receives their first eligible service in that calendar year.
The plan covers check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions. It’s important to check to see if there are any item or time restrictions for certain services. Be sure to consult your dentist before starting treatment to avoid surprises.
Are Any Services Excluded From CDBS?
This plan does not cover some procedures, including orthodontic care, cosmetic dental procedures, and dental care performed in a hospital. These exclusions mean families may need to explore other options for specialised options in these areas.
How the 2-Year Period Works
The plan benefit cap of [medicare cbds] is available over two consecutive calendar years. The two-year period begins at the start of the calendar year when your child becomes eligible and receives their first dental service.
- You can use the entire [medicare cbds] in the first year, leaving no funds for the second year
- If you don’t use the full amount in the first year, the remaining balance carries over to the second year (provided your child remains eligible)
- Any unused funds at the end of the two years cannot be carried over, and a new period will begin if your child qualifies
Convenient and Cost-Free Access to Oral Wellness
We make accessing CDBS benefits simple and stress-free. While some practices may charge a gap for care received, we understand that those who qualify for the scheme may be burdened by gap costs, so we are proud to offer bulk billing for eligible treatment, which means no out-of-pocket costs for covered procedures. It’s our way of ensuring your child receives quality dental care without adding financial pressure.
