How to Have A Cavity-Free Holiday Season

Woman with beautiful smile near a Christmas treeWith so many gatherings, gifts, and dinners, no one has the time to deal with a dental emergency over the holiday season. With these tips, you won’t have to! Here’s how you can avoid cavities and other oral health issues in the coming weeks and New Year.

  1. Beware of sneaky starches. Foods like chips, cakes, and potatoes are common seasonal foods, and they also have a tendency to get trapped between your teeth. Be sure not to skip on flossing to avoid plaque buildup.
  2. Skip the sticky stuff. Dried fruits are common holiday foods as they grace appetizers and charcuterie boards. While fruit is healthy, dried fruits are often sticky and tend to stay on your teeth a lot longer than fresh fruit. If you consume sticky foods this season, be sure to follow them with a glass of water.
  3. Watch your alcohol intake. While your holiday gatherings may include wine, brandy, and eggnog, consuming too much can actually dry out your mouth, creating a breeding ground for oral bacteria.
  4. Time your sweets. While it’s no secret that sweet desserts can cause cavities in excess, we’re not here to tell you to avoid them. Instead, eat them right after your meal when saliva production is heightened. More saliva in your mouth means less sugary debris is left behind.
  5. Choose whole grains and protein. You still have plenty of options for indulging in delicious food this season. Proteins like fish and chicken, whole grains, vegetables, and fresh fruit and [yogurt] are all yummy options that shouldn’t cause your teeth any trouble.

If you do experience a cavity or dental emergency, don’t worry, we’re here for you. Contact our practice as soon as possible to make an appointment.
